One-Dimensional Events (ODE)


A one dimensional space exists with a single measurable property, length. Position can be described by a single number on a single coordinate. The black smudges, or VA Shadows, left on institutional gallery walls by standing bodies are also one dimensional. They register as position, without area or volume. Behind VA Shadows highlights these one dimensional traces on the wall by tuning the volume of labor presence. The space itself is often understood through its measurable length. ODE is to explore the possibilities within this limitation, the sense of marginality, and the transitional conditions that such spaces can hold through human bodies and intentions.
The launch of One Dimensional Events begins this line of inquiry. By inviting bodies to encounter the strangeness of a linear space, we will host artists and projects interested in inserting their curiosity into our 47 ft long, 2 ft wide, 20 ft high space. We hope to approach this scenario through performativity and experimentation, and to invite the public to test the possibilities of one dimensional space together through a DIY art approach.
 Inaugral ODE Guest: Department of Public Imagination (DPI) &#124; 2-5PM, May 9, 2026 &#124; 

Department of Public Imagination will perform new infrastructure for dreamwork inside of our linear space, inviting the public to activate collective memory in order to imagine possible futures.

The Shelf


The Shelf is a shelf within our gallery space welcomes two-dimensional, small-scale creative formats. We look to engage with critical thoughts about arts and labor, reflections on community work, and community resources in the Greater Boston Area. The Shelf hosts six-month installations of artworks (fiber arts, prints, drawings...), artists’ books, zines, community work, and community resources to inhabit the shelves and to interact with community members. Open door/reading periods is facilitated throughout the on-view period.

	Field Study of the Leaning Bodies/Traces
funded by the Collective Future Fund 
&#38;nbsp;


	Field Study of the Leaning Bodies/Traces is an ongoing installation project by artist Yolanda He Yang, developed as part of Behind VA Shadows in collaboration with invited curators. Each participating curator selects a color, realized as a vertical band painted onto the gallery wall. Subtle yet deliberate demarcations at hip and shoulder height interrupt these fields of color, registering echoes of bodily contact. These marks reference the project’s focus: the traces left by Visitor Assistants as they lean against the wall for brief moments of respite during extended gallery shifts.
During each installment of new color, artist invites museum workers to leave their bodies of traces onto the wall with charcoal.

“I woke up on the first day of 2026 to a bright, blue sky. January in Boston is synonymous with grey, cloudy skies, maybe some rain or snow, waking up in the dark, and spending most evenings in pitch darkness. Winter is a time for slowness, rest, and coziness; to recuperate and reflect on time past, and to celebrate a year ahead. The first days of January embodied this. A blue sky does wonders for the mind and the soul, and we need everyday wonders more than ever...
Blue is the color of a perfectly new day. In Parsi culture, blue is associated with strength, good fortune, and protection from harm, manifesting in the use of turquoise as an embellishment for the home and jewelry. In the United States, blue workwear like indigo-dyed jumpsuits and denim was the norm because a) the dye was cheap and b) the color hid grease and dirt from manual labor, especially during the 19th century when daily washing was difficult. (Coined in 1924, this is where the term "blue-collar" comes from: the actual color of laborers' clothing).
 Blue is both peace and action; rest and labor; stillness and movement; protection of self and others. I hope this particular shade, called "morning sky blue," provides space for visitors to reflect on these values as we enter a new year. “ - Tessa&#38;nbsp;

Tessa Bachi Haas is assistant curator at the ICA, where she has organized and supported over a dozen exhibitions since 2022. Tessa is committed to supporting local arts ecologies and fostering an expansive, global exhibition program. Her recent projects include Christian Marclay: Doors, the 2025 James and Audrey Foster Prize, and the first museum survey of Derrick Adams. At the ICA, Tessa co-manages the museum’s publications program. She has previously held curatorial positions in Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., and has contributed to many exhibitions and catalogues in these cities. Tessa is a Ph.D Candidate in History of Art at Bryn Mawr College, where she earned her MA in 2019.

Behind VA Shadows is an artists-run DIY public art project founded in December 2021 by a group of Visitor Assistants at the ICA,Boston. Our initiative aims to break down barriers between art and the public, showcasing the creative work of museum workers while extending accessibility beyond institutional walls. By holding the alternative space for the public to engage with the creative identity of museum workers, we advocate for communal care to counter the issues of burnout within art museums and institutions.

Shelby Feltoon is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and independent curator. Her role at Behind VA Shadows is to lead certain curatorial project and collaborate with and aid guest curators to bring their ideas to life.

	Nemo Xu is a writer and an information professional in training. She is the editorial and archival lead of Behind VA Shadows. She works with artists and curators to produce exhibition content regularly and is currently working on building an archives for Behind VA Shadows.

	Theodora “Earthwurms” Shanahan-Jewett is a multidisciplinary artist whose work centers on personal expression, gender exploration, and identity.&#38;nbsp; Their volunteer work includes Horizons for Homeless Children and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Supporting community project like Behind VA Shadows aligns with their mission to increase access, visibility, and care in creative and educational spaces.


Acknowledgements
This project exists because people showed up, brought ideas, patched the holes during pop-ups, painted floors, and lent their hands, minds, and care in countless ways. Most of those companies are museum workers and museum visitors who care about the unseen labor in the insititutions. Entitled Translation-Tessellation, this show aims not only to present works born of each VA’s completely unique experiences, but also to both highlight the oft-repeated processes so prevalent in the development of a personal practice and offer style comparisons resultant of personal affinities and life paths. This is a serial, repetitive painting practice, which I can start with a table, a lamp, paper, and a sharpie. Eighteen pieces livestream my 18 nights in a row. The discipline of these paintings is " only paint when I am very drowsy and dizzy “. Through these Automatic Drawings, I want to capture the images of my hallucination caused by the tiresome that is accumulated in the daytime. The Tessellation names my process, and Translation is drilled into every second when ink touches the paper's surface when the shape of nothingness starts moving. "Events. Physical or immaterial forces. Moments and eras. Storms and QR codes."Most thankful to Janella Mele. Her work inspired me, so I began to make this practice as small digital glimpses.

Transformare, the name of this sculpture unveils this abstract riddle - trans (“across”, preposition) + formare (“form”), presents the configuration of translating 2d paintings Count the Time into 3D kinetic sculpture. Combining various forms, exploring bridging different dimensional&#38;nbsp;work is my translation - tessellation in terms of the art practice. Echoing the shape of the stretched&#38;nbsp;maroon fabric, Transformare imitates the how the individual is being distorted, adapted, and then finally transformed in the time of chaos to survive and thrive.

All of these works are a part of a series where I mapped my movements within a space. These spaces are often rooms I have inhabited in my life. They are visual translations of my movements and routines. Collectively, these paintings come together to document my emotional relationship to these physical spaces.For example, in Mozart Street (Set of 12) all twelve paintings have the same shape embossed in the center, that shape is the layout of the room I had when I lived in an apartment in Jamaica Plain. They document 12 different days during the span of the Summer of 2017. They are affected by the activities of the day, repeated movements or interactions such as if I had visitors or how I spent my time alone.

Written to explore ideas surrounding tension and release via looping landmarks within a slow-moving soundscape, palimpsest [1] develops parabolically through additive and subtractive sequences. This piece encourages the listener to acknowledge the two extremes of repetition: constants and changes. The former is introduced under the guise of a stationary drone, while the latter (functioning as formal catalysts) take the form of linked instrumental and ambient sounds. These individual levels stack as the large-scale form continues to reveal itself, creating a revolving chorus of changes-turned-constants that forms phasing relationships within itself. Accompanying the audio is a similarly structured film, providing a visual representation that follows the work’s over-arching trajectory.

My personal experiences become harder to recall in detail as they shift and change. This collection of marks with an undefined end is an attempt to reconcile what has slipped through with what remains. My hand guides my pen, working in tight circles of dots. The overall theme of these prints is my experience with developing anxiety and depression during the covid era and the continuous feeling of declining mental health now despite the fact I've been able to see all my friends and family much more often, which I foolishly thought would make my internal problems vanish, or at least subside a bit.I have abstracted these anxious and toxic thoughts into compositions using sharp spindly house centipede legs and bodies because after living in a basement apartment during covid I became very familiar with those creatures and although I am terrified of house centipedes I also feel a strange kinship with them. I wish to use these prints like a vessel or icon to contain those parts of me that are actively trying to subvert my mind and torture me. The process of carving these block prints was extremely cathartic because the satisfaction of violently slicing the block felt like it healed my own wounds as a result, like an inversion of the suffering cast on me.

The self- imposed limitations and boundaries have been released to show the heart, the internal, in a much clearer light. The epidermic block is draped in a second skin, a crocheted blanket reflective of natural forms taken from the body. It is warm and comforting, but also dense and heavy. The crochet stitches build upon each other radially, a repetitive meditative act focusing on the body it is forming. The reds and yellows radiate pain, through the back, the breasts, the hands. It is almost too much for the heart to keep up with. The outside, for so long, has defined what can be expressed by the internal. But those days are ending. They are freeing themselves of each other, while still tied together.

via: a group show featuring artists working at the art museum as Visitor Assistants6.1-6.17.22Behind VA Shadows is a creative collaboration of Visitor Assistants (VAs) who provide extraordinary educational service at the art museum. Starting in February 2022, the VAs produced 6 thematically curated on-line shows titled: Raison D'etre; Translation /Tessellation; Pockets of Belief; (u)Veil; Unfolding; and Discipline of Sleep. These web-based exhibitions bring VA's personal dialogues out of the museum to reach a larger community.This first in-person exhibit of the Behind VA Shadows Project, via unveils the unique individuality of the VAs. Presented in June 2022, in a vacant storefront in the hightraffic Downtown Crossing section of Boston, the show celebrates individual creative practices. Participation includes VAs across time, from 2006 when the museum opened its new world-class 62,000-square-foot building, to the present moment.Featuring 36 current and former VAs, via presents diverse art content, through performing and visual arts created by VAs in various stages of their careers. Some have made their first artwork for this show, others show locally and in galleries throughout the US. All participating artists share a special episode in their life - working as a Visitor Assistant, helping others engage with new artwork during long days of standing, pacing, and sometimes leaning by the gallery wall. The phrase "VAShadows" is both metaphorical and literal. During the day-to-day gallery routine VAs, wearing required black clothing, unintentionally rub the walls and mark their presence as a dim black band on the white surfaces, marks referred to by those who know as VA Shadows.Working day after day hidden behind masks during the difficult pandemic times, a bond of support developed between VAs. With more frequent staff turnover, and fewer gallery visitors than pre-pandemic, the sharing of personal stories and art ideas helped form a special camaraderie among the VAs.
