Why DOES YOUR PARTICIPATE MATTER?

To share art and support each other during the pandemic, we started out by curating a series of online exhibitions and then held two in-person group exhibitions in Boston. In June 2023, we have a physical space for exhibitions at 2 Linden Street, Cambridge, MA; so far, we have presented ten exhibitions by artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences, accompanied by various scales and forms of public programming. By creating opportunities and a platform for museum workers to exhibit their art and connect with the public, we are filling a gap for artistic expression while making art fully accessible for the public.

As we are committed to building the community for museum workers and artists in the Boston Area and beyond, we want to continue reaching out to different community members and making this space available for those who want to create and share.

Catalog Making: We WANT to Hear from YOU

For the year ahead, we are in preparation to launch our first issue of catalogue. Through an annual publication, we want to utilize this space to review our yearly exhibition programs, record our history, and expand creative formats that our current exhibition space, website, and Instagram page can’t capture. For the inaugural issue, we would like to invite your contribution!

What is Behind VA Shadows?

We are Behind VA Shadows, a public art project founded in December 2022 by a group of Visitor Assistants at the ICA,Boston. Our initiative aims to break down barriers between art and the public, showcasing the creative work of museum workers while extending accessibility beyond institutional walls. By holding the alternative space for the public to engage with the creative identity of museum workers, we advocate for communal care to counter the issues of burnout within art museums and institutions.
